Golf tournament raises funds in memory of generous family

L’ANSE — An event held annually to honor a tradition of giving will be hitting the fairways and the greens this summer.

The Tony Selkey Memorial Golf Scramble is held at the L’Anse Golf Club both as a fundraiser and to honor the name of the man who continued the philanthropic work of his parents, Robert and Gladys Selkey — parents who served the youth of Baraga County in many ways, including their creation of a youth endowment.

“When they passed on, Tony took up the baton, and he tried to uphold the work that his parents had done in the community,” said Gordette Coté Leutz, Executive Director of the Baraga County Community Foundation. “When Tony passed, it became the Tony Selkey Memorial Golf Tournament, and we have kept the tradition going in his honor.”

Proceeds from the scramble help fund operations at the Baraga County Community Foundation, which in turn helps fulfill the Selkey’s tradition of support for local youth with numerous programs like the Youth Advisory Committee.

“We have raised many generations of youth leaders who have gone out into the world able to be public speakers, able to know how to maneuver in the adult world,” Leutz added.

The event tees off on Friday, August 15th. You can contact the Baraga County Community Foundation at (906) 353-7898 to get involved. You can also follow the foundation on Facebook.
