ISHPEMING — Anyone driving on US-41 in Ishpeming has no doubt been slowed down by the roundabout construction projects.

The roundabout being installed on the highway, originally scheduled to be completed in early October, is way ahead of schedule.

A number of factors have worked in favor of the project being about a month ahead of its estimated timeline.

Project Superintendent Robbie Dobson says a combination of good weather and the people working on the roundabout project could lead to the project being completed by Labor Day.

“Oh it feels real good,” said Dobson. “We’re hearing a lot from the community that everybody’s pretty happy with what’s going on and they can see the progress. It would be nice to have an early finish before Labor Day as long as everything keeps going the way it is. I think that could happen.”

With the holiday weekend upon us, there will be no work done on the roundabout until Wednesday.

Drivers should still be aware of the detours and road closures in the construction zone.

“Second Street is still closed to the north if you’re coming from the west,” said Dobson. “You still have to use the detour. Just take your time.”

In all, the cost of the project is $4.2 million.
