MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — It’s a story that’s been shared over and over on our ABC 10 Facebook Page. On Thursday’s newscast, we informed you that a Michigan based grocery store, Meijer, is coming to Marquette Township in 2018.

The grocery store, gas station and convenience store will take up a combined 195 thousand square feet of space behind Lowe’s and near the Brickyard Road, U–S Forty One intersection.

According to Marquette Township Planning and Zoning Administrator Jason McCarthy, the project is expected to cost twenty million dollars.

McCarthy says the addition of Meijer adds another new store to the market.

“We have a great market here. It’s a growing area and an area that has a lot of interest right now,” said McCarthy. “We’re glad to be a part of it. I think Meijer is going to employ in upwards of 270 employees.”

With the addition of Meijer, there will be a change in how the roads near the store will work.

“When you enter into the Lowe’s driveway portion, once you get to Meijer it will be a one–way in and you’ll be directed to exit at the signal,” said McCarthy.

Kona Ridge Mining, LLC currently owns the property where the new grocery store will be located. Meijer has 224 grocery stores across six U.S. States.

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — A popular Michigan based grocer is extending its roots to the U.P. in the next two years.

Meijer will open a store in Escanaba in 2017 and another store in Marquette Township in 2018. The Marquette Township Planning Commission approved the Meijer site plan at its meeting Wednesday night.

The 2,500 square foot store and gas station will be constructed behind Lowe’s. We will have much more on this story Friday night at 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. on ABC 10.
