Prison kitchen bill making way through state house

LANSING — Another bill co-sponsored by state representative, John Kivela is making its way through the state house.

His bill concerning prison kitchens, House Bill 4748, was voted out of the House Committee on oversight and ethics this week.

The bill requires that prison kitchens have food safety inspections performed on the occasion a private contractor is managing the kitchen to prepare or serve meals.

The inspections would be performed by the local county health department. While the cost of the inspections would lay on the shoulders of the contractor providing food preparation and service at each facility.
