Fatal accident on Mackinac Island

MACKINAC ISLAND — One person is dead after a fatal bicycle accident Tuesday evening.

According to the Mackinac Island Police Department, 79-year-old Gail Gregory Johnson of Liano, Texas was riding a bicycle on Main Street when she lost control and fell under a moving horse-drawn carriage. Johnson was transported to the Mackinac Island Medial Center where she was pronounced deceased shortly after.

The horse-drawn carriage was traveling in the opposite direction driven by a 23-year-old Mason, Michigan man for Carriage Tours of Mackinac Island. It is unknown at this time if Johnson suffered a medical incident prior to the accident. An autopsy is scheduled for later today in Grand Rapids.
