Former local high school coach faces child pornography charges

HOUGHTON — The case against a former Houghton high school coach accused of child pornography is moving forward. ABC 10’S Rick Allen has the details.

Making his first appearance in Houghton County Circuit Court, 71–year–old Don Sawaski is facing multiple charges in a case of child pornography. The former Houghton High School coach and teacher previously waived his arraignment so a Not Guilty plea had been entered on his behalf.

At the pretrial hearing, prosecutor Michael Makinen indicated that he has provided the defense with a CD containing videos and photographs related to the case. The prosecution has also had a pediatrician review the materials. Sawaski’s attorney said he would like to have their own expert witnesses review the images.

He also requested that travel restrictions be lifted so that his client can go downstate. Sawaski is out on a $25,000 bond and was not permitted to leave Houghton County.

The court amended the restrictions to allow him to travel to Marquette County so he could meet with his attorney. A trial was has been scheduled for September with another pretrial in August.
