MARQUETTE — His resume is one to behold.

A retired orthopedic surgeon; a member of the Northern Michigan University Sports Hall of Fame; as well as service time in the U.S. Navy. And now, Dr. John Beaumier’s gift of a million dollars toward the new Beaumier Alumni Welcome and U.P. Heritage Center cements his magnificent legacy in the city of Marquette.

On the corner of Seventh and Lee Street, in the heart of the Northern Michigan University campus, is where the grand opening took place.

“I came here very disillusioned with college life,” recalled Beaumier, “and my dad talked me into coming to college.”

The U.P. Heritage Center premiered its new exhibit entitled, “Made in the U.P.”, and the place was packed to capacity with curious visitors.

“I got to know him [Beaumier] as a man who valued his family, his faith, his profession, the U.P, and Northern Michigan University,” remarked Northern Michigan University Board of Trustee President, Mark Pynnonen.

When asked how he felt about the new center, Beaumier exclaimed, “It’s fabulous, it really is.”
