DEQ hosts first U.P. conference about contaminated property
MARQUETTE — A first-of-its-kind conference was put on in Marquette Wednesday morning to help property owners and developers learn more about dealing with contaminated land.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality organized the very first Upper Peninsula Contaminated Property Management Conference. In addition to giving information on rules and regulations for dealing with such property, the conference was designed to help attendees learn how to attain closure on property that has been contaminated by human activity.
“Closure today means that there may be some residual contamination, but that the level of contamination is safe for reuse, and that can be safe for residential use, or commercial [and] industrial use,” said Bob Wagner, Chief of the DEQ Remediation and Redevelopment Department.
In addition to learning about available programs, those in attendance got a chance to network with local DEQ representatives.
“With respect to achieving closures and reviewing work performed by others, that is the role that they play. They actually give those approvals,” added Wagner. “So it’s important for people to know who they are and to get to know them and network with them.”
