ATALANTA, GA. — Scared straight — a recent survey shows 70% of smokers in the U.S. want to quit and the number of adults who smoke is at the lowest level since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started tracking it.
That could be thanks to TV advertisements. Tips from Former Smokers is the first federally funded anti–smoking paid media campaign. The ads – which you have most likely seen – feature former smokers talking about their smoking–related illnesses.
The ads first aired in 2014 and have continued to air in different phases ever since.
The CDC reports that an estimated one hundred and four thousand Americans quit smoking for good as a result of the 2014 campaign. The new ads feature people who as a result of smoking struggle with cancer, gum disease, premature birth and stroke caused by smoking combined with HIV.
