Plane makes emergency landing at U.P. airport

ESCANABA — A small plane made an emergency landing this morning at the Delta County Airport.

At approximately 11:00 a.m., an experimental Kitfox single engine had a gearbox failure which caused the plane’s prop to stop moving. The pilot was able to bring the plane down on the north side of the ramp, eventually hitting a ditch, which caused the aircraft to flip and invert.

Airport officials closed the runway for approximately one hour. The pilot escaped the incident uninjured.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
