$30,000 essay contest open for high school students
ISHPEMING — High school students across the country have a chance to win a $30,000 scholarship by simply coming up with an audio essay.
Voice of Democracy is a nationwide competition sponsored by the VFW. This year’s theme is ‘My Vision for America.’
High school students have to write an essay based on their vision for America and then record it on a CD. The entries must be between three and five minutes long.
“If you get to the national level and win $30,000 for placing first, that’s quite a chore,” said Irving Krellwitz, VFW 4573 Post Chairman. “And there’s also a trip to Washington D.C. where they get to meet their legislators and make a trip to the capitol.”
“Having served overseas, it’s very important that the kids understand what happen and what could happen,” added Krellwitz.
Last year, about 40,000 students took part in the program. There’s also a contest for middle school students to participate in, called ‘Patriot’s Pen.’ All of the entries must be turned in to the V–F–W Posts by Nov. 1.
