MARQUETTE — A local shelter is hosting an annual fundraiser to support their efforts of assisting survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

The Women’s Center is holding their eleventh annual Evening of Elegance at the Landmark Inn in Marquette this Saturday. The event will support the Women’s Center and it’s Harbor House.

This years theme is “Lighting the Way.”

Women’s Center Program Director Alisha Young says, “We are the light at the end of the tunnel a lot of times for people, survivors, so we’re doing “Lighting the Way” as our theme, and what that is, is we’re honoring past U.P. women that have kind of lit the way for us.”

This event is important to the shelter because the funds go to basic needs that is necessary for any home.

“We have a lot of donations that come in specifically for a certain thing,” Young added, “or our grants cover specific things, our services are covered through grants and that kind of thing, but what is not covered is the heat, or the lights, or other things like that are everyday things that need to be met.”

The event will include dinner, entertainment and auctions to benefit the shelter. Tickets are $100 and the entire ticket price goes directly to the shelter. They are still available for purchase at the Women’s Center in Marquette. The benefit ball is a formal evening, and it starts at 5:30.
