University’s career FEST breaks record of participants

HOUGHTON — The highlight of Michigan Tech’s Career FEST is the bi–annual Career Fair. Michigan Tech’s Career Fair is a huge draw for companies and students alike. A record 370 companies participated in the fall event with thousands of students hoping to land the one chance of a lifetime.

But the companies are also competing with each other to land the best up and coming talent.

Many of these recruiters are Michigan Tech graduates themselves and they are there to tell the students why they should also choose their company.

Maintenance Engineer for Nucor Corporation Max Rebottaro said, “We’ve got over 23,000 teammates now and the reason we have them is because they take care of one another. That’s what brought me back to Nucor. The culture is awesome and it’s just a great place to go to work.”

Michigan Tech expanded the idea of Career Fair this year to include several events as part of Career FEST. Those events give students the opportunity to talk to potential employers in a more relaxed atmosphere.

But this is the main event.

What makes Career Fair so valuable is that these companies are there because they have actual jobs for the students.

Facilities Maintenance Manager Daniel Rosenberg said, “We attend this and the Spring Career Fair every year and this year we’re hiring two dozen co–ops and we also hire full–time positions every year. Actually, we have eleven people that came up for this Career Fair and we are all Michigan Tech alumni.”
The Spring Career Fair is held in February.
