Texting 911 now an option in the U.P.

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP — People who find themselves in an emergency situation now have another way to contact 911.

The Upper Peninsula 911 Authority and Peninsula Fiber Network, LLC have announced that all emergency call centers in the U.P. can support emergency text messages from wireless services to 911.

“We are pleased that we are able to launch this service in all 15 counties in the Upper Peninsula at once,” said Gary Johnson, Marquette County Central Dispatch Manager.

Authorities are asking that if an emergency arises, calling 911 is still your best option. If you do send a text to 911, be prepared to text your exact location and the emergency help that is needed.
