DNR provides grouse management for beginners
MARQUETTE COUNTY — While the .U.P. has plenty of skilled hunters, grouse hunting which opened up just a few days ago, can be a bit tricky.
But thanks to the DNR, hunting these small game birds just got a bit easier.
The Department of Natural Resources has decided to pitch in and help out the less experienced and beginning grouse hunters with GEMs. GEM’s, is an acronym for Grouse Enhanced Management. The program provides locations throughout the Upper Peninsula which allow a person to easily find good Grouse habitat.
“They are well marked trails, they are kind of a work in progress in many areas. But the South Marquette County GEM which is located off of 438 on Perrin Brothers road in Gwinn. That GEM now has six trails that are actively managed,” said DNR biologist, Brian Roell
That trail will expand to 12 in the next few years. The kiosks are centrally located so they are easy for the novice hunters to find as well as containing extra large maps.
“You can also produce your own maps by going to MI hunt on our webpage or stop into any DNR office and they can help you get a map for local GEM in your area” continued Roell.
Grouse hunting hours are from sunrise to sunset with specific daily bag limits as well as season possession limits.
