Pot luck lunch for seniors at Holistic Senior Center
LAURIUM — A senior center in Calumet is getting a little help reaching out to the community.
Tuesdays and Thursdays are special days at the Calumet & Laurium Holistic Senior Center. Twice a week, the folks here host a pot luck lunch for local senior citizens at their center on 6th Street in Calumet.
It’s a place where everyone can come and feel at home. They can meet new friends and visit with old ones.
Calumet & Laurium Holistic Senior Center Secretary Lorena Kurburski said, “We have a real problem up here with our elderly people in isolation. They get into the habit of just staying home. They don’t talk to anybody day in and day out. And, so there is a big problem with depression and a lot of that has to do with getting out and talking to other people”
The center also teaches how to manage diabetes and hosts other classes such as PATH-Personal Action Toward Health. The Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People recently awarded the center a grant for $15,000.
Kurburski said, “That grant is to help communities enhance the community and to help bring people up who are lower income, help them to get better lives and to do things for themselves.”
That money has been going to make improvements such as new computers, a coffee pot, a microwave, and tables and chairs.
