Bill seeks to improve mental health care within justice system

WASHINGTON, DC — A bill introduced in the U.S. Senate this week could help improve access to mental health services for those in the criminal justice system.

Senator Gary Peters is cosponsoring the Comprehensive Justice and Mental Health Act. The proposed legislation would extend support for programs that identify those with mental health conditions. It would also provide more support for mental health courts and crisis intervention teams.

Development of training programs for law enforcement is also called for by the bill.
