Alleged car thief’s case stuck in neutral

HOUGHTON — The case against a Calumet man charged with two break–ins and stealing a car is slowly moving forward.

36–year–old Isaac Laplander appeared in Houghton County Circuit Court today for a pre–trial hearing. The final details of a possible plea agreement are still being worked out.

The prosecution says part of the problem is that there has been a change in the corporate structure of the dealership where Laplander allegedly stole the car from last April. Police say this all happened while he was out on bond for another B&E charge stemming from an incident at an auto parts store.

A trial date will be announced soon with another pretrial to be held 30 days before. If the case does go to trial, it is expected to last two to three days.
