Police investigate tannerite and fireworks explosion

MASTODON TOWNSHIP — At least two people may be facing criminal charges after reports of an explosion in Iron County early Wednesday afternoon.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post say they responded to a report of an explosion and gunfire at a residence in Mastodon Township around 12:30 p.m. Further investigation revealed that two people had attempted to bring down a structure using large amount of tannerite and fireworks.

Police seized commercial grade fireworks, tannerite, and “pipe bomb”-type explosives. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called in from Gaylord to dispose of the explosives. The investigation is ongoing, and police say charges are being sought against those involved.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisted at the scene by Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement.
