Man drowns while swimming with his granddaughter

STANTON TOWNSHIP — An 87-year-old man drowned in Lake Superior Saturday morning.

Just after 11 a.m., the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Stanton Shores Road in Stanton Township to rescue a man drowning in Lake Superior. Emergency personnel found the man’s body approximately 30 feet off of the shoreline in about six feet of water.

First responders tried reviving the man once they got him back to the shore. The man was then transported by Mercy Ambulance to UP Health System – Portage, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the man was swimming with his 11-year-old granddaughter when he began having breathing problems. His granddaughter tried helping him, but he told her to get back to shore.

Stanton Township First responders, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the DNR all assisted at the scene.
