SAULT STE. MARIE — One of the Soo Locks is still undergoing repairs after being taken out of service at the end of last month.

Officers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Detroit District say inspections determined the gates on the MacArthur Lock were not mitering or closing properly. The lock was originally planned to be closed for only about ten days, but engineers now expect the lock to return to service around August 19th.

As of this past Sunday, officials say that 61 ships have been delayed a total of 70 hours due to the MacArthur Lock’s closure. The Corps is facilitating navigation by routing ships through the nearby Poe Lock.
