Breaking & Entering suspect enters ‘no contest’ plea

HOUGHTON — A L’Anse man could be headed to prison as part of a plea agreement in his case.

49–year–old Camiel Vanhaecke pleaded ‘no contest’ in Houghton County Circuit Court today to breaking and entering a camp in Duncan Township in June. The police report said a generator and other items taken from the residence.

Vanhaecke first pleaded guilty to the charge but had to change it to ‘no contest’ after admitting to the judge he had little recollection of the incident since he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.

As part of the agreement, a second charge of possession of burglary tools was dropped. He will be sentenced as a Habitual Offender, 2nd Offense, and faces up to 22 and a half years in prison.

Vanhaecke was remanded back into the custody of the Houghton County Jail until his sentencing in about four weeks.
