CHATHAM — One woman is dead after a two-vehicle accident in Chatham Tuesday night.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post say the incident happened shortly before 8:00 p.m. at the intersection of M-94 and M-67. Preliminary investigation shows that a vehicle driven westbound on M-67 by 50-year-old Peggy Sue Larsen of Skandia had slowed or stopped at the intersection, but then continued straight, crossing paths with a vehicle traveling northbound on M-94.

The northbound vehicle attempted to avoid Larsen’s car but ended up directly hitting the driver’s side door. Both vehicles left the roadway and struck an electric pole.

Police say Larsen was killed in the accident. The driver and passenger of the northbound vehicle were not injured. The electric pole was significantly damaged and had to be replaced by the power company. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the incident.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee and Gladstone Posts, Munising City Police, firefighters and first responders from Rapid River, Alger County EMS, and UPPCO personnel all assisted at the scene.
