ISHPEMING — The Greater Ishpeming–Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting today to celebrate a brand new storefront in downtown Ishpeming.

Natural Escapes, which is located on Main Street, specializes in handcrafted items like shampoo, lotion, and body wash created from natural ingredients. Owner Donna Ellison’s time in the healthcare field showed her how a hobby could also be helpful to others.

“I found through the course of my career that more people were able to tolerate the natural fragrances and natural soaps that I make,” said Ellison.

“What we’ve found now is there’s new people and new generations coming in who want to know that what they’re using is safe for them. It’s safe for their family,” said Kori Tossava, Executive Director of the Greater Ishpeming Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce, “and Donna has done a fantastic job of being able to do that and turn it into a business and a storefront.”

Ellison’s handmade items are inspired by time–tested family recipes.

“My grandmother, she passed away a couple of years ago, and I got all her recipes and her notebook,” added Ellison. “She kept wonderful journals. [I] kind of like to keep her spirit alive, you know?”

Ellison added that she can also make specialty items for customers looking for something special.
