CHASSELL — While the Chassell Lions Club was busy serving up delicious strawberry shortcake at the Copper Country Strawberry Festival, a dozen lovely candidates for Strawberry Queen answered questions and walked the runway, but only one would win the crown.

Houghton High School graduate and current Michigan State University student Maria Sliva is the 2015 Strawberry Queen.

“I wanted to be a pageant queen since I was a little girl and I love strawberries and I just though it was an ultimate show of poise and articulation,” said Sliva.

Crowds packed the festival on Saturday as they perused the wide variety of vendors and took rides aboard Michigan Tech’s science research vessel, the Agassiz. The Chassell Fire Department and First Responders served up their famous Chicken Barbecue to hungry festival goers after the parade.

Member of the Chassell Fire Department and First Responders Derrick Verran said, “We have chicken, cole slaw, beans, a roll and a drink, all for $10. It helps purchase shirts, uniforms, stuff that really the taxpayers really don’t need to pay for.”

And for dessert…what else? More strawberry shortcake.
