Man injured after falling asleep at the wheel
ONTONAGON TOWNSHIP — An Ontonagon man was injured after falling asleep at the wheel in Ontonagon Township Friday evening.
Deputies from the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office say they were dispatched to the scene on Lakeshore Drive near Four Mile Rock Road shortly after 6:00 p.m. 38-year-old Daniel Bigge told deputies he was traveling north when he fell asleep at the wheel. When Bigge awoke, he found that his vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree.
Police say he suffered an incapacitating injury to his leg as a result of the accident. Bigge was transported by Sonco Ambulance to Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital and later airlifted to Aspirus Wausau for further treatment. Deputies say the airbags in Bigge’s vehicle did deploy. The vehicle, which was heavily damaged, was removed from the scene by Howie’s Towing of Bergland.
The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by the Ontonagon Volunteer Fire Department.
