MARQUETTE — Some new additions are coming to third street in Marquette and just in time for summer events. The Marquette Downtown Development Agency is trying to make Third Street more accessible.

How you ask? Installing Parklets is one way.

The executive director for the Marquette downtown development authority Mona Lang says that Parklets are small stations for the public near local event hotspots.

Lang says, “What they are, is they are a way to put some temporary, pubic seating in areas where we need some activities, some place making.”

The state chose Marquette as one of eight communities in Michigan to try the new idea. Everyone is welcome to grab a seat and relax.

Lang added, “This is a public space, anyone visiting any business on third or just someone strolling down third is welcome. They can sit and people watch and watch traffic, and so we’re excited.”

The Parklets should be ready soon. The DDA are still making minor adjustments to the parklets to make them safer, like slip guards, side guards and reflective tape on the barrels.
