One arrested, two injured in head-on collision

MANISTIQUE — One person was arrested and two people were injured in a head-on collision that shut down a bridge in Manistique Monday afternoon.

Manistique Public Safety Officers say they responded to the scene of the two-vehicle accident on M-94 at the Siphon Bridge shortly after 2:30 p.m. Officers found that the 32-year-old female driver of an eastbound pickup had crossed the center line and struck a westbound SUV driven by 67-year-old Franca Catini of Algonquin, Illinois. Officers closed the bridge to traffic while police, fire, and EMS responders managed the accident scene.

Catini and her husband, 69-year-old Francis Catini, were both transported to Schoolcraft County Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the pickup, a Manistique resident, was taken into custody for operating while impaired and operating without a driver’s license. She is lodged at the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department on $250,000 cash or surety bond. She is awaiting arraignment. Police say Schoolcraft County Prosecutor Timothy Noble is reviewing the incident and additional felony charges may be forthcoming against the pickup’s driver.

The Siphon Bridge was reopened at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Manistique Public Safety was assisted at the scene by the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department and the Sault Tribal Police Department.
