ESCANABA — Monday was the last day of operation for a power plant in Escanaba.

The city-owned plant was shuttered as of 11:00 a.m. this morning according to City Manager Jim O’Toole. Negotiations between the party that’s interested in purchasing the plant and the city continue, and those talks are ongoing.

The agency that operates the Midwest’s regional power grid had decided to discontinue reimbursement for the plant’s operating costs starting this July. The city also experienced a large power outage back in February after a transformer at the plant caught fire.
