HOUGHTON — Some maintenance work in the park on the Houghton waterfront may disrupt playtime for some children.

When the weather is nice, it’s a popular place for families and children. But for the next couple of weeks, the City of Houghton will be doing some maintenance on Kestner Waterfront Park.

That means park attractions like the Chutes & Ladders play area will have to be closed off at times to visitors.

“There’s going to be equipment operating down there. Things will be blocked off. We’ve got other parks in the city that they could possibly use if they’ve got little kids that need to play,” said Houghton City Manager Eric Waara. “Parks will be open at the end of the day after the shift is over. There’s no major construction going on, per se, but with equipment going back and forth doing some grading and that in the interior, we certainly just want everyone to be out of the area while we’re doing that.”

Work will be done between 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday through Friday this week and next with parts of the park closed off as needed. When the maintenance is completed the public should see that is was well worth it.

“The Rotary had put in a paver sidewalk last year and there’s some raw edges from where the old sidewalk was, so we’re going to need to dress those with top soil and probably sod,” said Waara. “And then, hopefully by the end of the week, our playground equipment will be here and they’ll be installing playground equipment down there next week.”
