Michigan Tech wraps up spring season

HOUGHTON — Spring training for the Michigan Tech football program wrapped up this weekend. After 14 practices, the team held their annual spring game in front of the fans and it helps when the weather is beautiful.

The Huskies are looking to build off one of their most successful season in school history. Michigan Tech went 9–2 last year, clinching their second NCAA playoff birth in school history. And with the season just months away, Coach Tom Kearly says the intrasquad game was more for the players to get out on the field and have fun.

“We got what we wanted during spring practice. We got 13 out of our 14 practices outside and we finished that on Thursday. We had a really good period there with some inside stuff and situational scrimmages. And today was there’s. They picked the teams, they talked all the trash, they had their side bets. My biggest concern was that no one gets hurt,” Kearly said.

One of the biggest storylines coming into this season was the quarterback competition and who would fill the shoes of Tyler Scarlett. Obviously, a decision hasn’t been made yet on who will take the first snap in September but the candidates are looking to make a case for their candidacy.

“We came out and competed and some young guys made some plays, got some opportunities to be in. It was just an all–around good day, I felt like,” junior quarterback Isaiah Hackney said.

“I thought it was good. We mixed up the teams. We had some certain guys in certain spots that they’re not used to playing. But again, it’s all about competing and we had a lot of young guys making plays on my team and the white team. White team did a good job and I’m really excited for our young guys and our older guys establishing themselves,” junior quarterback Brandon Cowie said.

One person did steal the show and that was sophomore running back John Williams. He rushed for 171 yards during the game, including two 60–yard TD runs.

“It’s nice. This is supposed to be fun and that’s how it turned out. We didn’t want anyone to get injured. Anytime you can make a big play, it feels good,” Williams said.

“He has a burst. He has very good vision. He has the ability to feel the seams and has the burst to get through the seams. And the other thing he does is make people miss and I think that’s a very important quality for a running back, is the ability to make somebody miss,” said Kerley.

Michigan Tech will open their season Thursday night on September 3rd at Sherman Field versus Wayne State.
