North Central gets ready for state championship game

EAST LANSING — After St. Ignace and Calumet brought home state basketball titles for the girls, many began to think the boys might have the same fate. The North Central Jets think so…and they are one game away from bringing home another title to the U.P.

The top–ranked Jets looked like they couldn’t miss early, riding a 29–4 run while getting everyone involved. The 71–46 beatdown of Fulton definitely was a statement by the Jets that they are not here to take second–place.

“We want to finish it off. We want to go into tomorrow’s game playing hard and playing fast and physical and just play our game. We can’t play scared down there. We can’t change our offensive gameplan. We got to stay aggressive and be the team that’s the fast, physical team that we can be,” Mercier said.

And sophomore Jason Whitens will be the go–to guy after a great all–around performance in the semi–final game.

“He takes 11 shots a game so I like the way he’s been playing this year. He stepped up his leadership role as a sophomore this year and it’s turned out great for our program,” said Mercier.

The Jets will take on Morenci, who knocked off Waterford Our Lady 53 to 52. That game will take place at 10 a.m. tomorrow. We send our best wishes to the Jets.
