MARQUETTE — A Northern Michigan University student has received recognition from the National Geographic Channel for his filmmaking ability.

Nat Geo WILD recently held its second annual Wild To Inspire short film competition.

Jake Lamons is a 19-year-old NMU freshman from Kalamazoo. He entered a film called “Northern” that he shot in the U.P., proving that you don’t need exotic locations to experience natural beauty.

“They chose four finalists, and I was one of four people chosen for the competition,” Lamons said. “They flew me out to Idaho for the Sun Valley Film Festival.”

He didn’t win the contest. However, since the judges came from National Geographic, the Huffington Post and other media outlets, “Northern” may have a future with one of them.
