CALUMET — Downtown Calumet is in the final preparations before the start of Friday’s CopperDog 150 Sled Dog Race.

Roughly 20 teams of ten dogs each will make the officially-135-mile trek in three stages, first to Eagle Harbor, then up to Copper Harbor Saturday and back down to Calumet on Sunday.

Another 20 teams of six dogs will sprint from Calumet to Eagle River Friday night in the single-stage CopperDog 40, and this race continues to be a favorite among the mushers.

“This is our third year back to the CopperDog,” 2014 CopperDog 150 champion Jake Golton said. “It’s one of our favorite races. It’s always a fun format. We like to race in ten-dog races, so it just fits our kennel perfect.”

The mushers got some chow and their bib numbers at a luncheon this afternoon at the Calumet Theater Ballroom.

The teams of sled dogs will begin on 5th Street with opening ceremonies starting tonight at 6:30.
