Marquette Seniors exercise and have fun doing it

Marquette seniors do a variety of exercises that incorporate music and dance moves

Exercise is important to maintaining good health no matter how old you are. But for seniors, finding a workout that combines fitness and fun without being too strenuous is hard to come by.

Luckily, the Marquette Senior Center offers an aerobic program that balances both qualities every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. Sometimes an instructor comes in to guide the group, but for the most part, they just pop in a tape and go through the routine together with the help of some music.

“We do a lot of  armchair exercise because we are older and a lot of us aren’t as steady on our feet, and every once in a while we have big (exercise) balls that we will play on,” Vi Dupras said. “It’s just good for your joints, and keep them lubricated and limber.”

The lounge room provides a convenient setting for seniors to jump in and out of the workout while still keeping each other company. And after everyone finishes the program, there’s usually plenty of goodies waiting for them to help replenish their energy.

Anyone over the age of 55 is welcome to join in. All you have to do is come by and sign in, and the best part is, it’s free of charge.
