WELLS TOWNSHIP — One lane of US–2 in Delta County has been closed to allow crews to repair a railroad bridge damaged by an accident on Thursday.

Deputies from the Delta County Sheriff’s Department say the incident happened around 12:15. A logging semi truck equipped with a Ponsse processor struck the railroad bridge just north of the Escanaba River in Wells Township causing severe damage to the bridge. Deputies say it appeared that the boom of the processor struck the overpass as the truck attempted to drive underneath.

A bridge inspector from Canadian National Railway, which owns the overpass, said that crews hoped to complete the repairs sometime today. Helper vents were installed underneath the bridge to allow rail traffic to continue.

MDOT said they closed the outside northbound lane at around 8:30 Thursday night to allow railroad crews to work on the repairs.

No injuries were reported in the accident.
