January 28th, Pasty Central Day in History

Written by Pasty Central

On this day in a 1885 the Portage Lake Herald published its last edition in the Copper Country. The newspaper would reappear a year later as the “Hancock Mining Herald” only to fail again and re-emerge as the “Michigan Copper Journal” which again disappeared in 1893.

All together the three publications brought less than a decade of competition for the weekly Gazette, which became a daily newspaper in 1898. Also on this day in 1973, a Michigan soldier the last American to die in the Vietnam conflict was killed 11 hours before the cease fire went into effect. Lt. Col. William Nolde of Mt. Pleasant gave his life for his country on this day in 1973. Pasty Central Day in History January 28th.
