Huskies dominant again in win vs. Ashland

HOUGHTON, Mich. — The No. 24-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team continued to roll with a 63-39 victory over Ashland today at the SDC Gym. The Huskies are now 11-1 overall and 7-1 in GLIAC play.

Much like it did in its 75-35 win over Lake Erie on Thursday (Jan. 8), the Huskies jumped out to a big lead with strong defense. Tech limited Ashland (9-5, 5-3 GLIAC) to just five points through the first 13-plus minutes while building up a 27-5 advantage. Danielle Blake had 10 points along with two blocks and two steals on the defensive end.

The margin grew to as many as 22, but five straight turnovers kept the Huskies from adding to their lead. The halftime margin was 35-14.

Tech’s defensive intensity continued through the second half. The Eagles didn’t score their 20th point until five minutes into the half or their 30th until 4:19 remaining in the game.

“This was our best defensive game of the season,” said Tech coach Kim Cameron. “Ashland is a talented young team, and to hold them under 40 was awesome.”

Blake finished with 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Huskies’ in both categories. Morgan Anderson added 13 points. Nine other Tech players scored in the game.

AU’s high scorer was Suzy Wollenhaupt with seven.

Final shooting percentages were 50 for the hosts and 33 for the visitors.

Paired with a 75-35 win on Thursday (Jan. 8), Tech won its two games at the SDC Gym this week a combined 138-74.

Michigan Tech plays two more home games next week beginning with a Thursday (Jan. 15) contest vs. Ferris State.
