ALGER COUNTY — Three people were safely rescued Christmas Eve after becoming trapped at the bottom of the Log Slide outlook near Grand Marais.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office says a 911 call was received around 2:00 p.m. requesting assistance for three individuals from Indiana, a 17-year-old female and two 18-year-old males, who had become trapped near the base of the Log Slide, which is about 7 miles west of Grand Marais. The caller reported that the individuals had walked down the Log Slide but were unable to climb back up due to the ice.

Deputies say multiple agency resources were dispatched to the call, both to the top and bottom of the Log Slide. Firefighters from Burt Township Fire Department descended the slide with a rope rescue system and were able to safely bring all three of the trapped individuals back to the top.

The Log Slide is part of the Grand Sable Banks, and many locations along those banks are up to 300 feet high. Deputies recommend that visitors use caution and sound judgment when traveling up or down the banks, as conditions are always changing.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Burt Township Fire Department and EMS, National Park Rangers, and Eastern U.P. Search and Rescue all responded to the scene.
