UPDATE: Accident reduces Marquette Township US-41 eastbound traffic to one lane

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — More information has been released regarding a traffic accident on US-41 in Marquette Township this morning.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post say the crash occurred around 9:45 a.m. when 31-year-old Shawn Hodgins of Marquette was driving a 2010 Ford Best Buy van westbound along US-41 when he lost control of the vehicle on the snow-packed road surface, crossing the median and colliding with three eastbound vehicles in a chain reaction crash. 22-year-old Davis Smith of Marquette was a passenger in the van.

Police say others involved in the accident were 54-year-old Frank Paris of Negaunee driving a 2013 Jeep Wrangler, 45-year-old Albert Randall of Negaunee driving a 2002 Toyota Tundra pickup, and 33-year-old Roy Byman of Negaunee driving a 2006 Subaru Legacy. Smith and Paris were both injured in the crash and transported to U.P. Health System Marquette by U.P. Health System Marquette EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. Hodgins was cited for traveling too fast for conditions.

The Marquette Township Fire Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, and U.P. Health System Marquette EMS assisted at the scene.

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Eastbound traffic on US-41 in Marquette Township is down to one lane after a four-vehicle accident.

It happened at about 10 a.m. a short distance east of the railroad bridge that passes over the highway.

Details were not available at the scene, including whether or not there were any injuries. However, it appears the four vehicles involved were a silver Jeep, which sustained extensive front-end damage, a green Subaru, a truck, and a Best Buy Geek Squad van.

All four vehicles were towed from the scene, and eastbound traffic will likely be restored to two lanes shortly.

Michigan State Police from the Negaunee Post, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and the Marquette Township Fire Department all responded to the scene.
