NMU-OTS wrestlers win big in Panama

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestlers captured a team title and five individual medals this past Saturday (Oct. 18) while competing in Panama City, Panama, in the International Eduardo Campbell Cup.

Gold medalists were Brandon Rice of Washington, Ill., in the 66 kilogram weight class and Parker Betts of St. Michaels, Minn., at 130 kg. Silver medalists were Joseph DeNova from Fortson, Ga., at 66 kg and Brandon Marshall of Keystone Heights, Fla., at 84 kg. Earning a bronze medal at 59 kg was Kyndall Rutz of Englewood, Colo.

“This was our first test of the season,” said NMU coach Rob Hermann. “The hard work our athletes are putting forward each day in practice is paying off. I am happy with the performance and results of each wrestler.”

The NMU-OTS finished the event in first place for the second year in a row. Second place went to the City de Panama team. Teams from Brazil, Costa Rica, Columbia, Panama and the United States competed in the tournament.

The NMU-OTS team will be in action again Nov. 6-9 as it travels to Hempstead, N.Y., to compete in the Bill Farrell International.
