Houghton event shows support for downtown businesses

HOUGHTON — This past weekend, the city of Houghton held its inaugural Let’s Go Downtown Houghton to promote local businesses, new and old.

The event featured entertainment all across Shelden Avenue as well as special sidewalk sales. Downtown Business Development Director Susie Landers says there was always a plan to create an event like this, which allows residents to become tourists in their own backyard.

“In the last couple of years, we’ve welcomed quite a few new businesses and we’d like to show our support. We’re also getting people to come back and getting reintroduced to the businesses that have been here for the long haul that are our cornerstones of our downtown,” Landers said.

Landers adds that the downtown area hasn’t been as crowded as it used to be, but she hopes the recent uptick in traffic will bring more people into the businesses.
