UPDATE: Names released in fatal US-41 accident

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the persons involved in an accident that claimed the life of a Kansas man in Marquette Township Saturday night.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s office says that the fatal accident occurred around 8 p.m., when 55-year-old Paul Cox of Plains, Kansas was struck on the east bound lanes of US-41, near the Cedar Motor Inn, while trying to cross the highway.

Cox attempted to cross US-41 when he walked into the path of an eastbound 2001 Chevrolet Venture that was driven by 43-year-old Vickie Kinnunen of Gwinn. Cox was struck by the mini-van and thrown onto the grass median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one in the mini-van, the driver and three passengers, was injured in the accident. Cox was headed to Buffalo Wild Wings with a group of people. No one else in the group was injured.

Deputies say preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol and speed were not factors in the accident with regard to Kinnunen. The incident remains under investigation.

The Sheriff’s office was assisted by the Marquette Police Department, Michigan State Police, Marquette Township Fire/Rescue, and Marquette General EMS.
