Stabbing suspect’s preliminary exam delayed

HOUGHTON — The case against a Houghton County man who was allegedly involved in a stabbing in Hubbell two weeks ago is being delayed.

Paul Moilanen, 42, appeared in Houghton County District Court today along with his attorney, David Gemignani, who requested more time to gather information.

Moilanen’s preliminary exam has been rescheduled to November 10th. He’s also been ordered to have a forensic examination to determine criminal responsibility. The forensic exam has not been scheduled yet.

Molianen has been charged with second-degree murder for the death of 48-year-old Marcy LaVigne. He is also charged with attempted murder of LaVigne’s daughter.

Both counts carry a life sentence if he is convicted. Bond has been set at $2.5 million.
