Woman dead, girl injured in Hubbell stabbing

UPDATE — Friday, September 19, 1:45 p.m.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department says the two victims are a 48-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl. The woman died at the scene.

The girl made the 911 call and was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital in Laurium for treatment. There’s no word on how she’s doing.

Police cannot yet release the suspect’s name, but they say he’s a 42-year-old man. Officers say he fled the scene but was arrested shortly before 5:30 this morning. He’s in jail on aggravated assault charges, and the Sheriff’s Department is seeking murder charges from the Houghton County Prosecutor’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing, and police say they expect to release further information sometime soon.

The Houghton Police, the Hancock Police, the Laurium Village Police, the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police from both the Calumet Post and the Marquette Forensic Lab, Bootjack First Responders and the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s staff have assisted in the case.


HUBBELL — Two women were the victims of a stabbing incident at a residence in Hubbell early Friday morning.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office say they responded to the complaint at around 3:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered that the two females had been stabbed. A male suspect reportedly ran from the scene, but deputies were able to take him into custody in the woods near the residence after a short search.

The Sheriff’s Office expects more information about the incident to be available later today.
