Tech football player earns GLIAC award

BAY CITY, Mich. — Garrett Mead has been named GLIAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Michigan Tech’s 18-17 win at Wayne State last Thursday (Sept. 4).

The senior from Alpena, Mich., kicked four field goals in the contest including the game winner as time expired. Mead booted one field goal in each quarter, connecting from 23, 29, 21 and 25 yards, respectively. His four field goals were one shy of his own school record of five set last September vs. Walsh.

Mead became the most prolific kicker in school history during the game, pushing his career total to 24 field goals. Todd Werner (1996-99) previously held the mark with 21 career field goals. Mead is also on the verge of the career record for kick scoring points. He has 176 (178 is the record).

Michigan Tech will travel to Malone on Saturday (Sept. 13) for its next test. The Huskies play their home opener Sept. 20 vs. Saginaw Valley State.
