Freighter free after running aground near Mackinac Island

STRAITS OF MACKINAC — A freighter that was stuck in the Straits of Mackinac near Mackinac Island is now awaiting inspection near St. Ignace.

The Mackinac Island Fire Department said the freighter American Spirit was carrying iron ore taconite when it became aground near the Round Island Lighthouse Thursday.

The freighter Sam Laud unloaded some of the iron ore and pulled the American Spirit free Friday morning.

American Spirit was traveling from Two Harbors, Minnesota to East Chicago, Indiana. No one was injured, and no pollution or iron ore leaked from the vessel.
