Ishpeming recipient of grant to help with roundabout construction
The City of Ishpeming is one of a dozen Michigan cities to receive a Small Urban Grant Award from the Michigan Department of Transportation.
The grant will be used for creating a connector between Second and Third Streets in 2015 when MDOT beings to build a roundabout on U.S. 41. The city is using a combination of state and federal funds to build the connector.
Ishpeming City Manager Mark Slown believes a roundabout on U.S. 41 will benefit the whole community.
“The biggest benefit to the city of Ishpeming–which there’s no other way we could ever get but to have a roundabout out there–is to slow traffic down,” Slown said. “The only way that traffic is ever going to slow down is by a roundabout, and that’s a great thing.”

The connector will cost about $500,000, and the grant is worth $350,000. The city will use its own funds to pay for the remaining amount.
