Former mayor of Escanaba arraigned on embezzlement charges

The former mayor of Escanaba is facing a possible 20 year sentence following his arrest on felony embezzlement charges Monday.

Detectives from the Iron Mountain Post of the Michigan State Police have been investigating 58-year-old Leo Evans’ case for some time now. They say it involves the embezzlement of at least $100,000 in funds from the Escanaba Eagles Club of Delta County.

Evans was arraigned in Delta County District Court yesterday and is in the process of being bound over to Circuit Court today. He has since been released on bond pending future court proceedings.

Evans resigned from his position as Mayor Pro-Tem in April. Detectives from the Gladstone Post of the Michigan State Police assisted with the investigation.
