Houghton break-in suspect taken into custody over the weekend

A suspect in a series of break-ins on the north side of Houghton this past weekend is in police custody.

William Hynde happened to have his camera on him when the suspect was apprehended early Saturday morning after he reportedly cut himself on one of the windows he attempted to break into. Hynde was returning to a friend’s house when he noticed the suspect crouching in front of his girlfriend’s PT Cruiser that was parked in the driveway of 800 E. South Avenue. He says he initially thought it was one of their friends playing a trick on them. But, as they approached the car, the suspect moved from the front end to the right side, and then ran away heading northbound towards Houghton Street. Hynde and his friends then notified the police, who arrived a short while later around 2:20 a.m. and began searching the area.

The suspect is described as a male in his late 30’s, wearing brown boots, jeans, and a black t-shirt. Residents in the area say he attempted to break into two homes between Ripley and Portage Streets and a sorority house just off of Ripley.

Houghton City Police have not released any further information regarding the identity of the suspect, any possible charges or specifics on what items were stolen during the incidents at this time.
